Eating Out as a vegan

As a vegan, you might be scared to eat out, often because it seems like salad will be your only option!

Restaurants and even fast food outlets are getting more on board with offering vegan options so you might be surprised at where you can eat and what choices are available.

As a general rule of thumb, Asian-based cuisine will often feature more plant-based choices. These are often super easy to adapt just by taking out or swapping an ingredient or two. Thai cuisine is a great example of this. Mexican and Indian cuisine can be good options too.

A few other tips:

●      Plan ahead and scope out whether an eating place is likely to do vegan food. Sometimes, you can see this on their website but if not, call and ask what their menu is like and if they’ll cater for vegans.

●      If you don’t have any vegan-friendly options, ask if they’ll put some on the menu. There may not be any vegan meals right now but that doesn’t mean they won’t be open to having some, especially if people are asking for vegan options.

●      Veggie options can sometimes be adapted to be vegan. Sometimes, they’ll be naturally vegan and won’t need adapting.

●      Arrive prepared with a few options you can suggest to alter a dish to make it vegan-friendly. Even if the restaurant staff aren’t entirely sure how to help, you can talk to the chef about ways to cater to you.

●      Double-check what’s included, especially for things that aren’t labeled as vegan. Veggie meals can sometimes include a sauce that isn’t vegan or non-vegan cheese, for example.
